lnitiatory rites in ancient Greece.
The hunting tale of the Odysseus in Parnassus

During a rescue excavation north of the ancient Agora in Athens, back in the 1960’s, some red figured sherds of excellent quality came to light. Among them a unique representation of an homeric theme, known from Odyssey, but depicted for the very first time until today, was recognized. The theme became the motive for the examination of initiatory rites in ancient Greece, especially through the glasses of the Athenian society of the 5th century B.C. Besides the iconography annotation, the lecture discusses the relevant rare vase shape, connected with symposium, as well as its attribution to a famous Athenian painter.
